In the 1960s when Brian Wilson was writing the Beach Boys’ biggest surfing hits, he would sit at his piano with his bare feet in a tray of sand. Closing his eyes, he imagined he was on a sun-kissed Californian beach surrounded by tanned teenagers enjoying the greatest time of their lives. The songs born of this experience are among the catchiest and most memorable ever committed to vinyl.

Copywriters do this kind of thing every day for their clients. Well….nearly. I don’t mean write hit records, although some of us probably do. I mean we pretend to be someone else, somewhere else. We listen to our clients’ ideas, we ask questions to determine their motives and aspirations, and we think about the target audience. Then we craft the right words with the right tone to stir the desired reaction.
